Introduction:

Android 12 has been unveiled, which means it’s time to take a look at what’s new and what’s going on with this new operating system. This was an exciting day for Google and its supporters because Android 12 is the newest version of the company’s mobile operating system.

This new OS is packed with plenty of upgrades, fixes, and more, so it’s certainly worth checking out: Everything You Need to Know About the New Android OS.

There has been a lot of hype this week over the release of Android 12. Android is no longer beta, and you can grab it for your Pixel or Google-branded device now. Unlike in years past, there isn’t a mobile app development company preview to be aware of – but that also means there are some noticeable changes in how you go about grabbing newer versions of Android.

This is because the platform will now be available as an over-the-air (OTA) update in place of through an ADB command on your computer or downloading an image file instead.

What is the Android 12 release date?

On 4th October, Google released Android 12 with a consumer release coming shortly afterward. It’s also worth noting that the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a are not expected to get Android 12L, while the Pixel 4 and newer will.

As always, Pixels are the first to get it — or at least they’re the first phones to run Google’s own custom build of Android, which is what the company distributes directly. It’s a long process, though, and it will take months before you get it.

What are the key features of Android 12?

To answer this question, you would need to know what phone you have, and who makes it. Following are the key features of Android 12:

  • Design refresh

Android 12 comes in the form of a design refresh, which means buttons are now bigger and bolder. Everything is more rounded, and Google isn’t as concerned about taking up more space on the display. Android 12, it seems, is focused on using space smartly rather than trying to pack more stuff into it.

There are quick settings toggles in Android 12, but much larger than in past versions of the software. There’s also a new way to lock your phone without an actual button.

The design has been improved compared to last year’s version, which had some aesthetic glitches like displaying two different Google Podcasts icons — a good sign that things should be smoother and more polished when the final version comes out.

  • Material You

Material You is the new theming option that essentially takes color scheme cues from your wallpaper including primary colors and complementary colors.

Even third-party developers can hook their apps into them giving it a unified look. Additionally, the color customization options enable you to fashion colors across the system, including your wallpaper and the app shelves on your home screen, and will adjust based on the new colors you choose.

Colors are derived from your wallpaper, helping you make the phone feel uniquely yours. You can also go in and pick a primary color for accent colors, applied to notification panels and other elements.

  • Revamped Notification Shade

With Android P, Google is making the notification shade better organized. There’s a new Settings button on the top right corner of the screen, which gives a dark overlay when tapped. Quick Settings, for example, are getting easier to access — you’ll be able to toggle 4 of your most-used Quick Settings on the first swipe of the notification shade, in the form of relatively large rectangular buttons.

  • New Privacy Controls

Android 12 offers several features for the privacy-conscious. It gives users more control over their privacy than ever before. In the new Privacy Dashboard, you’ll see a history of all the permissions you’ve granted each app, and be able to revoke those permissions at any time.

You can also give apps approximate location permissions instead of specific access, by tapping the “approximate” toggle in the Quick Settings menu. Access to your microphone, camera, and the clipboard can now be restricted in Quick Settings as well.

  • Scrolling Screenshots

If you’re on Android 12, you can take scrolling screenshots. Just like how you shoot now, this feature takes pictures of the content that appears on your screen and pushes the button when the menu at the bottom of the display appears. If there is more to scroll down, you will see a “Capture More” button that automatically scrolls down and captures what’s showing.

Final Words:

Android 12 is an update that people have been looking forward to since Android 9 launched last year. Above is the brief rundown on what is expected to see, and most of it has turned out to be true. We’re looking forward to seeing how Android 12 evolves in the coming months as Google continues to outline its plans for the future.
