“This operation is a significant step forward in advancing our strategic objectives,” said Francisco Reynés, Executive Chairman of Naturgy, when announcing the company’s entry into the United States by acquiring Hamel Renewables in 2021. Since then, the Spanish energy company has solidified its presence in one of the key renewable energy markets, driving large-scale solar generation and energy storage projects.
Entering the Market with a Forward-Looking Vision
Naturgy took its first step in the United States by acquiring Hamel Renewables, a company specializing in developing solar and energy storage projects. This operation, announced at the beginning of 2021, brought in a portfolio of more than 8 GW in solar projects and 4.6 GW in storage across nine states.
The company’s entry into the U.S. market was further strengthened by an exclusive five-year collaboration agreement with Candela Renewables, focused on the joint development of new solar initiatives.
Project Development in Texas
One of the most significant milestones for the company in the United States has been the construction of its 7V Solar Ranch photovoltaic plant, located in Fayette County, Texas. Construction of this project began in 2022, making it the largest solar facility developed by Naturgy to date. This initiative was led by Francisco Reynés and involved an investment of €264 million.
The 7V Solar Ranch has an installed capacity of 300 MWp and is expected to generate approximately 560 GWh of energy each year. This amount of energy is sufficient to meet the annual consumption of about 160,000 American households. This project marks the first step in deploying the portfolio acquired by the company in the country.
In 2024, Naturgy began constructing a second major project in Texas: the Grimes solar plant, with an investment exceeding €285 million. Located in Grimes County, this facility will have a capacity of 210 MW and is expected to begin operations in 2025, further strengthening the company’s presence in the state.
More Than 30 Projects Under Development
In addition to the projects already underway, Naturgy has announced that it is currently developing a portfolio of more than 30 solar initiatives in the United States, collectively totaling more than 6 GW of capacity. These initiatives are at different stages of development and represent a central component of the company’s international strategy to diversify its renewable portfolio and contribute to global decarbonization goals.
A Commitment to Sustainable Energy
Naturgy’s activity in the United States is part of its 2021–2025 strategic plan, which prioritizes investment in clean and sustainable energy across key markets. The company aims to play an active role in transforming the global energy model, backing resilient infrastructure, innovative technologies, and a long-term vision that combines economic growth with environmental commitment.
