To meet the FBI’s criteria for a serial killer, a subordinate must have a “rest” period between murders before deciding to strike again.
But the National Institute of Justice offers an alternative definition of serial killers. It states that the killer must have killed at least two people motivated by a sadistic need for mental and emotional satisfaction.
According to an article on serial killers in Psychology Today, there is no perfect definition of a serial killer. They have different motives and operate in different psychological states. Some have a type – target the victim with a certain identifier – while others kill randomly.
