Thinking about moving down south? There are a lot of great states to choose from, though Alabama doesn’t seem to be on the top of many lists – and it should be!

Alabama has some of the fastest-growing areas in the south and has many alluring qualities, from Birmingham homes for sale that are of a great price to mouthwatering barbecue that comes with a side of southern charm.

Its History Shaped the Nation

Montgomery, the state’s capital, was the sight of a major moment in The American Civil Rights Movement. In 1955 Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus, sparking outrage on both sides of the fight

Birmingham is home to the 16th street Baptist Church, which was famously used as a protest headquarters for the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.

Cost of Living is Affordable

Along with the second-lowest property tax in the US, Alabama offers a housing market in the Top 3 for affordability.

The state is also in the top five of the nation for the most affordable rent. The cheapest places to live are Roanoke, Tuscumbia, Attalla, Hamilton, and Lincoln.

Football is No Joke

Sports in general are a huge deal in Alabama, but the biggest draw is college football, where the Bama vs. Auburn rivalry is legendary. The University of Alabama has won well over a dozen national championships.

Watch the Weather

Alabama has a humid subtropical climate, calling for extremely hot summers and mild winters. It’s one of the warmest states in the country, with summertime temperatures averaging in the low 90s.

Alabama is privy to natural disasters of varying kinds, like tornadoes, hurricanes, and flooding, so be mindful of what season it is and what weather may be headed your way. Hunstville is actually one of the top 10 cities in the nation most at risk for national disasters.

The Coastline is Stunning

You might not think of beaches when you think of Alabama, but its coastline has some of the most pristine sand and emerald waters you’ll see. Check out the Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Dauphin Island for great spots to catch some rays.

Tourist Destinations are Great for Natives, Too

There are a lot of cool things to see and do throughout the state. The US Space & Rocket Center is home to one of the biggest collections of rockets and space memorabilia; the GulfQuest National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico is full of interactive exhibits, theaters, and simulators, and the Alabama Wildlife Center is the state’s oldest and biggest wildlife rehabilitation center.

You’re Going to Love the Food

The state is one of the great food destinations of America, with locally-owned restaurants woven throughout that serve up authentic cuisines.

For barbecue, grab a table at Golden Rule Bar-B-Q in Irondale or Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q in Dothan. Soul food seekers will want to try restaurants like the City Cafe in Northport, Martin’s Restaurant in Montgomery, and Mary’s Southern Cooking in Mobile.

There’s much to savor, from tomato pie and catfish to banana pudding and sweet potato fluff.
