What are K-type thermocouples?

While they’re a bit pricier than other thermocouples, like their J-type rivals, for example, the K-type is arguably the more versatile of the two – seeing as they’re able to cope with much higher temperatures – up to 1260◦C.

Not only are they able to withstand these higher temperatures, but they’re also superior to their counterparts in terms of their resistance and capability, thanks to their metallic makeup.

The K-type is constructed with nickel/chromium and nickel/aluminium alloys, giving them much better protection against oxidisation and acidity than any other temperature sensor.  

What are they used for?

K-type thermocouples are often used for applications over 550◦C, up to their maximum working pressure

Seeing as they’re able to withstand such high temperatures, and exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, they’re ideal for use in chemical production industries, petroleum refineries, and appliance safety testing.

In some environments, thermocouples are a legal requirement.

For instance, since The Gas Safety (installation and use) Regulations came into play in 1998, all commercial catering equipment must be fitted with an appropriate flame failure device or temperature sensor – so that the gas supply will cut out until flames are extinguished.
