Deebo Samuel is a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers. He played college football at South Carolina and was drafted by the 49ers in the third round. Here are 5 things you didn’t know about him.

  1. Tyshun Raequan Samuel is Deebo Samuel’s real name.

He has been known as Deebo since he was a toddler, which many fans may not realize.

Galen, Samuel’s father, was a huge fan of Friday, a 1995 cult film.

Ice Cube and Chris Tucker star in the buddy stoner comedy “Deebo”, in which the late Tiny “Zeus” Lister plays a notorious neighborhood bully.

Galen noticed his son’s tendency to steal toys from other children when he was a toddler.

Galen nicknamed the future 49ers wide receiver “Deebo” in reference to Lister’s character in the Friday film since he was a bully.

Samuel’s stepmother, Precious Martin, gave the wide receiver a second nickname.

Because of his incredible speed, she dubbed Samuel “Sweet Feet” in high school.

Samuel went into mourning after Lister passed away from complications caused by Covid-19 in December of 2020.

As the wide receiver put it, “It was a blessing meeting you and getting to know you for sure. Rest up big brother.”

During an ESPN interview in 2019, Samuel met his namesake for the first time.

2. During Samuel’s youth, his biological mother, Felicia Winn, got into the “street life”.

Having an absent mother and growing up in a rough area, Samuel grew close to his stepmother, Precious Martin.

Samuel became homeless after his grandmother, Kat, became ill and could no longer care for him during the ninth grade, when he began living with his stepmother and father, Galen.

Samuel credits his stepmother with getting him to settle down and work hard on his school grades, which helped pave the way for him to play college football.

3. After attending Chapman High School in Inman, South Carolina, Samuel committed to South Carolina University in 2013.

Coming out of high school, Samuel was the country’s No. 112 wide receiver recruit, despite being the No. 23 high school football recruit.

Before playing for South Carolina, Samuel ranked No. 838 in the nation.

Several big-name football programs recruited the four-star recruit, including North Carolina and Maryland.

East Carolina, Charlotte, Appalachian State, and Old Dominion offered scholarships to Samuel.

His home-state university was ultimately chosen by the South Carolina native.

4. Samuel studied at the University of South Carolina for five years.

If Samuel’s football career hadn’t worked out, he could have been managing a retail store in South Carolina.

In Spartanburg, South Carolina, the wide receiver grew up in a rough neighborhood.

In 2011, Samuel’s close friend, who was just 11 years old, was shot and killed. Amir, Samuel’s cousin, was also shot and killed in Spartanburg in 2019.

5. During his time at Chapman High School in Inman, Samuel set the school’s touchdown record with 53 touchdowns.

Samuel finished his senior year at Chapman with 61 receptions for 1,184 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Samuel also rushed for 837 yards and 13 touchdowns in addition to his receiving stats.
